In the movie Fight Club, Tyler Durden states that he would fight his dad if given the chance. Whether you have a relationship where you can hug or you would cheerful strangle the guy, most of us have complicated relationships with our male parental figure.
Making that jump from boy to man is tough, and sometimes it’s even tougher making your dad recognize it.
How can you earn your dad’s respect?

1. Learn to Cook Meat

He’ll be happy you learned to make a pie, and he probably won’t say no to a great soup, but when it comes to impressing your father with what kind of adult you’ve become, learn to cook meat.
In some households, that means a barbecue, and in others it means creating the perfect steak, but learn how to tame that beef.

2. Don’t Let Him Bully You

Unfortunately, some fathers are bullies.
Stand up to him, and don’t do it by yelling or cursing. Instead, just walk away from him, and don’t talk to him until he’s ready to see things your way.
It sounds harsh, but sometimes it’s all that some men understand.

3. Invite Him Out and Pay for Everything

When one man asks another man out, there’s definitely certain equality in the relationship.
Take him out to a steakhouse or out to see something that interests him. Interact with him as an adult that you like, not as a child interacting with his parent.
If you think he won’t let you pay for things, pay for tickets and the like in advance.

4. Take Him to Your Workplace

There’s nothing that helps your father see you like an adult like letting him see how other people view you.
If you work at an office, in a crew or in a creative field, show him how you do your work. Show him the people who respect you and how much responsibility you have.

If his last view of you holding responsibility was a paper route, this can be a pleasant surprise.

5. Ask Him About Himself

This is another part of getting to know your father as an adult and earning his respect.
Your father had a life before you arrived. He did things he loved, he did things he was ashamed of, and his life was changed for good when you came along.
Learn your dad’s stories and you will learn a lot about how he thinks of himself.

6. Dress Well

This doesn’t mean that you need a three-piece suit or that you need to spend a grand on your clothing. Just dress in a way that’s more adult than a T-shirt and jeans.
Choose clothing that suits you, and if you’re having a tough time with it, it’s worth your while to invest, briefly, in a personal shopper.

If you want to look sharp, you need to pay for it, and there’s nothing that makes you look more grown-up than the right outfit.
