Riot police in Brazil have fired tear gas to disperse thousands of protesters in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, on a march against the cost of hosting the 2014 Fifa wo

rld Cup.

The numbers of people on the street was much lower than during similar protests during last season’s Confederation Cup.
Demonstrators hurled stones while others burned tyres and blocked roads.
They say they are discontent at the billions of dollars being spent on this summer’s football tournament, rather than social projects and housing.

Protesters Criticises the Cost of Hosting the 2014 Fifa World Cup in Brazil.

Some of the protesters promised demonstration would get bigger and more frequent as the World Cup opening ceremony gets closer. The tournament is due to begin on June 12.
Protests also took place in other cities, including Brasilia.
Teachers and civil servants, among others, were also on striker across Brazil.
In Rio, aerial images showed hundreds of people marching in rush-hour traffic on main thoroughfare. The city will host the final match of the World Cup on July 13.
Protesters there and in Sao Paulo, Brazil’s biggest city, clashed with police before beginning to disperse.
