While not every man wants to be a classically trained chef, virtually
every man wants to be competent in the kitchen. It comes in handy as it
allows you to eat some pretty good food without having to pay a lot of
money. It can also impress any friends and family you decide to cook
for.
1. Read Cookbooks
We understand the road the media is taking so you may not be inclined
to get an actual book, unless there’s some chef out there who you
really like. In any event, it’s a good idea for every man to aggregate
some recipes and try them out.
2. Buy Fresh Ingredients
Buying fresh ingredients is the key to transforming your cooking.
Like a skillet, the ingredients that you use are your tools. If your
tools are shoddy, there’s a good chance that the overall project will be
too. Keep that in mind.
3. Find a Farmer’s Market
This could be an add-on to the previous point, but it’s worth its own
section because of how awesome farmer’s markets can be. Not only are
you basically ensuring that you get fresh ingredients, but you’re also
getting fresh stuff for a lot less than you normally would from
traditional supermarkets. You’ll even be more inclined to find rarer
ingredients.
4. Step Outside of Your Comfort Zone
Some of us are picky eaters, some of us aren’t. You should be willing
to expand your taste a bit as there’s a whole world of flavors that
your palette probably hasn’t tasted yet. Go out and try different
things.
5. Join a Cooking Class
A cooking class should never be out of the question. People love to
learn hands-on. You’ll also be able to learn instruction from someone
who knows what they’re doing. It’s not too difficult to find a cooking
class at a community college. Many recreation centers have them too.
6. Find Inspiration
You can get inspired by many celebrity chefs out there. As men, many
of us find renowned chefs like Gordon Ramsay or Anthony Bourdain to be
pretty good bets. They have cool recipes and an attitude to match.
7. Limit Frozen and Premade Meals
Pre-made and frozen meals are great because they’re cheap. However,
if you’re trying to cook better, they may not be the best choice. It
draws away from getting experience in the kitchen. It can also be more
expensive in the long run.
8. Buy Real Cookware
At some point in time, you’re probably going to need better quality
cookware. Why not start now? While you think that your cooking is
sufficient at this point, you’ll definitely be able to tell the
difference once you get a great pan.
9. Understand Food Pairings
Food pairings can be difficult to understand, but ultimately
worthwhile once you start cooking. Also, you’ll really love surf and
turf once you’re completely confident in your ability to make it.
10. Host Dinner Parties
Preparing meals for your friends is incredible, especially when you
have confidence in your skill. After a successful dinner party, you’ll
get the praise you’re dying to hear. Also, it’s pretty classy.
